In recent years, the food landscape of Cebu exploded with the emergence of host of restaurants all over the city. Many of these restaurants were previously unknown to the residents of the Queen City of the South. One of these restaurants is the Abaca Baking Company.

The Abaca Group

The Abaca Baking Company is a strictly from scratch bakery under the Abaca Group of Chef Jason Hyatt. The Abaca Group includes the Abaca Restaurant, Abaca Boutique Resort, Maya Mexican Restaurant, Tavolata, and Beqaa, among others. Chef Jason was previously the executive chef of the Lan Kwai Fong Group. When he moved into Cebu with his wife Anna, he opened the Abaca Restaurant.

Word Of Mouth

The Abaca Baking Company opened with little fanfare as Chef Jason opted to rely on word-of-mouth marketing to promote the bakery. Soon people came in as early as 7:00 AM just to get the opportunity to taste their bagels, bread, scones and croissants. The place has become so successful that four other branches were opened by the company in a short span of time.

The original branch of the Abaca Baking Company is located at the Crossroads in Banilad. The four other branches are located at Paseo Arcenas in Banawa, Robinson’s Cybergate Mall, Ayala Center Cebu and the ground floor of the TGU Tower at the Cebu IT Park.

Croissants

The best-selling products of the Abaca Baking Company are the croissants, which are typically sold out by lunch time. In addition to the croissants, the place also offers a number of other bakery items, including the ensaimada, raisin roll, pandesal and bagels. The Abaca Baking Company also offers all-day breakfast items, sandwiches, burgers, soups and salads.

The store itself has a quirky yet homey ambiance. Numerous artworks made by different artists from the Qube Gallery are displayed at the store. In addition, the menu clipboard and art on the walls were supplied by Happy Garaje.

The menu items at the Abaca Baking Company range from PHP295 for the Croissant Sandwich up to PHP595 for the Garlic Marinated Half Chicken. While these prices are quite high for many Cebuanos, they can still taste many of the items offered by the store, which are priced between PHP15 for the Mini Meringue and PHP80 for the Corned Beef Bun. The Abaca Baking Company also offers discounts of up to 50 percent on all counter items and pastries an hour before the store closes.
