Even though it is one of the smaller islands in the Camotes island group, Pacijan Island is home to the biggest lake in the Visayas, Lake Danao. Lake Danao is situated on the northern part of the island and is considered as one of the most breath taking sights in the Lost Horizon of the South.

Lake Danao

The guitar-shaped lake is home to numerous types of plants and animals. In addition to the plants that have grown naturally in the area, the locals also planted and cultivated other types of plants, including yams, corns, and sweet potatoes, among others. This freshwater lake is also home to numerous fish species as well as different bird species.

Visitors can enjoy the serenity and beauty of the lake while having a picnic at designated areas around the lake. The lake was once the main source of food and livelihood of the residents. With the rapid development of the province of Cebu, fishing cannot sustain a family anymore. But, tourism became a new source of income for the locals, who also ventured into weaving sol-soli grass into mats, handbags, hats, and handicrafts. Soli-soli grass can be found along the coast of the lake.

Lover’s Lake

Lake Danao is also called the “Lover’s Lake” based on a story about its origin. According to the story, husband and wife Isyong and Isyang were constantly arguing with each other. Due to this, they were cursed by the heavens and were separated from each other after a lake started to form around them. The two were later turned into the two islets that can be seen in the lake. The two islets, Crocodile Islet and Snake Islet, are found in the southern part of the lake. In addition to the story, the serene and romantic atmosphere at Lake Danao is quite appealing for couples or lovers to visit. The gentle breeze and chirping of birds on the trees further enhances its charm to visitors.

Tour

Visitors to Lake Danao should not leave the place until they have experienced going around the lake on an outrigger boat. The cruise or the “Sakanaw” takes around one hour and gives visitors a scenic view of the lake as they pass along its coast. They can also visit a small islet within the lake itself. Visitors also have the option of getting off the islet and have their pictures taken on the islet.

Lake Danao is located around thirty minutes away from Santiago Bay and is just one of the places where visitors have the chance to see the beauty of nature.  There are two access points to the lake, Green Lake Park and Lake Danao Park.
