Cebu is the land of meat lovers since it is home to the ginabot, Larsians and the world famous Cebu lechon. So, it may not be easy to find a restaurant serving vegetarian dishes. That was the situation decades ago. These days one can find a number of places offering dishes friendly to vegetarians. The following are just some of the places where vegetarian dishes are offered in the Queen City of the South.

Planet Vegis

Planet Vegis was established by Robert and Melinda “Nene” Lim on May 6, 2015. The couple, long-time vegetarians, put up the restaurant to promote good health and nutrition. Nene said all the ingredients used on the dishes are fresh, organic and natural. The restaurant also offers a number of frozen and dried vegetarian products.  Prices of the dishes at Planet Vegis start at PHP30 for the siopao up to PHP450 for the family size Hot Pot. The place also offers a Vegetarian Buffet lunch and dinner on Saturday and Sunday. Planet Vegis is located at the corner of J. Diaz Street and E. Osmeña Street , Guadalupe, Cebu City. For inquiries, you can call them through (032) 254-7544.

Miller Hospital Cafeteria

Since the H. W. Miller Memorial Sanitarium and Hospital is owned by the Seventh-Day Adventist Church, the cafeteria offers a wide variety of meatless dishes. Aside from gluten and tofu dishes, the cafeteria also serves cinnamon bread, whole wheat bread and soy milk, among others. Since it is a cafeteria, the prices of the dishes are rather cheap compared to regular restaurants in the city. The hospital is located along Tres de Abril Street, San Nicolas, Cebu City. For inquiries, you can contact them through (032)261-2100 or (032)261-1974 local 116.

Shiv Dal Roti Corner

Located close to a major university in the Queen City of the South is Shiv Dal Roti Corner. The place offers a wide variety of vegetarian food for diners who are mainly students of the university.  While the place looks like your typical cafeteria, the Shiv Dal Roti Corner serves dishes you would normally find in a restaurant. These dishes include biryani, samosas, roti, pakora, dal, and meat made with gluten. The Shiv Dal Roti Corner is located along Aznar Street, Cebu City. For inquiries, you can call them through 0915-824-3349.

Guadalupe is known to be the home of the best ngohiong in the Queen City of the South. In addition, the place is also where one can find one of the best Spanish restaurants in this side of the archipelago. But Guadalupe is also where a number of restaurants offering healthy vegetarian food are located. Aside from Planet Vegis, one can also find La Veggie Deli Vegetarian Café in Guadalupe.  La Veggie Deli Vegetarian Café is another family-owned restaurant offering vegetarian food. Similar to Planet Vegis, the owners are also vegetarians who want to offer healthy food items to its guests. The restaurant offers Vegetarian Shawarma and Burritos, Curried Vegetables, Soya Barbecue and Salads. The restaurant also offers Filipino dishes using veggie-meat. Prices of the menu items are between PHP75 for the Vegetarian Shawarma and PHP110 for the Curried Vegetables. La Veggie Deli Vegetarian Café is located at 7B-1 First St., Guadalajara Village, Guadalupe, Cebu City. For inquiries, you can call them through (032)253-6670 or 0927-958-3755.

Healthy U is another restaurant in the Urgello area serving vegetarian dishes. Similar to Shiv Dal Roti Corner, the place has a cafeteria –style design. It offers a number of food items for the health-conscious residents of the area. These items include Pinakbet, Sariwang Gulay, Sautéed Eggplant, and Ampalaya with Tofu, among others. Since the place is located close to a university, it offers meals suitable for the budget of students. The meal consists of rice, a choice of viand and vegetables. It also includes a free serving of soup, mineral water and an appetizer. Healthy U is located along A. Tormis Street, Cebu City.  For inquiries, you can get in touch with them through (032) 402-2386 or (032) 406-2960.

Meatless meals should not be limited to the season of Lent since it offers a number of benefits to one’s health. While it may not be easy for most Cebuanos to have a meal without meat, going on a meatless diet once in a while is not only good for one’s health but also for the members of the animal kingdom.  Have you checked out these vegetarian eating places in the Queen City of the South already?
