Longtime residents of Cebu are quite nostalgic when they recall things that remind them of their youth. These things may include restaurants, stores, food, or even animals that may not be found anymore these days. We compiled another five things you should know if you are longtime resident of Cebu.

Tartanilla in Cebu

Long before the jeepney became the king of the road, the streets of Cebu were owned by the tartanillas. The tartanilla or kalesa is a two-wheeled horse-drawn vehicle that seated five people, including the cuchero. These carriages were once a common sight in Cebu before they were replaced with motorized vehicles. You can rarely see the tartanilla roaming the streets of Cebu these days. But, this former king of the roads of Cebu can be seen going around select streets in Cebu during the annual Gabii sa Kabilin every May.

Sisig of the Maynila Restaurant

Before Mang Inasal brought its version of the Sisig to the Queen City of the South, there was once a restaurant on Nivel Hills serving the best Sisig in town. The Maynila Restaurant was popular among taxi drivers waiting for passengers playing at the casino across the street. Their most popular menu item was their Sisig. In fact, it was considered as the best Sisig in the Queen City of the South.

Burger at ABC

Before Zarks, Burger Joint, and Big Tom’s came to Cebu, there was once a small store that was popular for their burgers. The hamburger and cheeseburger at D’ ABC in the side streets of Cebu was considered as among the best in the city. People from all over the city would pass by this small store just to get the chance to taste their burgers.

Day Old Chick at Sideline Restaurant

At the end of each week, Cebuanos normally troop to their favorite hangout places around the city. In the past, there was no such thing as below zero drinks. So, these places would offer something unique to attract customers. One of these places offering something unique is the Sideline Restaurant, which is located at the side of the former Baseline Restaurant. Their unique offering is the one-day-old chick or simply the day-old chick. These are delectable treats are appetizers or “pulutan” for a session with family and friends. Many other restaurants followed the lead of Sideline after the day-old chick became popular in the weekend crowd in Cebu.

Bowlodrome

Cebu once had a standalone ten-pin bowling place located in the Mabolo area, the Bowlodrome. While the place offered ten-pin bowling, Cebuanos at that time were more familiar with duckpin bowling. So, people would normally play duckpin bowling rather than ten pin bowling at the Bowlodrome

These are five more things you should remember if you lived in Cebu for a long time. You may also remember these things if you are already one of the Titos or Titas of Cebu.
