Ever wondered where Cebu got its name from?

We know for a fact that Cebu is the oldest city in the Philippines, but did you ever wonder where the name CEBU was derived from? According to some historians, Cebu got its name from the word SEBU, which means “animal fat”, as Cebu used to be a fishing village before the arrival of the Spaniards.

Cebu is also one of the most historical places in the country. Some of the historical sites that can be found in Cebu are the Magellan’s Cross (a Christian cross planted by the Portuguese and Spanish explorers), the Lapu-Lapu Shrine (a 20-meter statue found in Mactan erected in honor of Datu Lapu-Lapu), Colon Street (the oldest and the shortest national road in the Philippines), and the Fort San Pedro (the oldest military defense structure built by the Spanish and indigenous Cebuano laborers).

Fast-forward to 1937, Cebu, which was then under American rule, became a charter province and was independently governed by Filipino politicians. As you can see in the video, Cebu slowly emerged as a center of trade and commerce in the Philippines. It has become a gateway for many regions in Visayas and Mindanao.

At present, Cebu has become one of the most developed countries in the Philippines. Cebu is now known not only for its numerous business opportunities but also for its food, beaches, and festivities, and has become one of the most sought-after tourist destinations in the country.
