Many of the caves in Cebu are historically significant since they served a purpose in the past. During the Second World War, these caves became the temporary shelter of Cebuanos escaping from the invading Japanese forces. One of these caves is found in the southern town of Pinamungajan, the Kamangon Cave in Barangay Lamac.

Pinamungajan

The Municipality of Pinamungajan is located on the western side of the island. It was established by the Spanish colonial government in 1815 and is mainly an agricultural town. The town is home to a number of natural and man-made attractions. Aside from the numerous caves in Barangay Lamac, the town is also home to the first wave pool on the island of Cebu.

Kamangon Cave

The name of the cave is based on the Cebuano word “kamang,” which means to crawl. The name is fitting since you have to crawl on the ground before you can get into the cave itself. Crawling into the cave is worth it since you will be impressed with what you can find inside. The cave is located in Barangay Lamac, which is home to over a hundred caves. According to officials, Kamangon Cave is the biggest and most visited cave in the area. In fact, it is considered as one of the must-visit places if you find yourself in this part of the island.

The only access to the cave is a small opening where you have to crawl. The cave has a number of stalactites and stalagmites that sparkle like crystals. You can also find a number of passageways inside the cave. Due to this, it is recommended that you visit the cave with a guide or you might find yourself getting lost inside. As you go deeper into the cave, you will see different formations of stalactites and stalagmites. Some of these formations resemble animals and other figures that further enhance the beauty of the cave.  The Kamangon Cave is also home to a number of nocturnal bats as well as some snakes.
