Boljoon is considered as the most picturesque town in southern Cebu. It is one of the favorite stopovers of tourists visiting the southern part of the island. Aside from the centuries old church and heritage sites, the town is also home to some natural attractions that have piqued the interest of visitors. One of these natural attractions is the Ili Rock or Ilihan.

Ili Rock or Ilihan

The Ili Rock or the Ilihan is a natural rock formation that greets visitors as they enter the southern heritage town of Boljoon. The limestone cliff was once used as a natural fortress by natives living in the area. It is a huge geological formation that is considered to be the second most important landmark for the residents of Boljoon.

But, the 2013 earthquake caused cracks to appear on the rock. To ensure the safety of motorists, the Department of Public Works and Highways implemented a slope benching project that removed the cracked portions of the rock. While the project was controversial during its implementation, it eventually made the road safer for motorists to pass.

Aside from stabilizing the rock, the project also improved it. Two viewing decks were added into the Ili Rock. The viewing decks both offer an excellent view of Boljoon, the sea, and the islands of Bohol and Siquijor. There is also a parking space where visitors can leave their vehicles as they go to the viewing decks. A rappelling board was also installed on the side for visitors who are into extreme sports.

Other Places to Visit in Boljoon

In addition to the Ili Rock, you can also visit the centuries old Nuestra Señora del Patrocinio Churchof Boljoon as well as the old rectory of the church, which is the oldest residential building from the Spanish period in the town. You can also visit the El Gran Baluarte, which is the biggest Spanish watchtower in Cebu.

The Ili Rock or Ilihan of Boljoon is just one of the natural attractions in the southern town of Boljoon. While it went through some developments to make the place safer for motorists, it still gives visitors an excellent view of the town, the sea, and the islands facing this part of Cebu.
