Barili

Barili is a town located in the southwestern part of Cebu. The name Barili came from the “balili” grass, which is a local grass growing abundantly in the area. In another story, the name of the town was supposedly the result of miscommunication between the locals and the Spaniards. According to the story, a couple used to live in a house located in the present town center. One of the daughters was named Inday Balili. A big tree close to the house had grass vines on its trunk. The name of the vine was “luy-a luy-a” or “balili.” When some Spaniards passed by one day, they asked the couple for the name of the place while resting under the shade of the tree. The couple thought the Spaniards were asking for the name of the grass on the tree and told the foreigners it was “balili.”
