Golf is a sport where players use a club to hit a ball to bring it into a series of holes on a course. There is no standardized area for the playing field of the sport. A game is won by the player with the lowest score. The game is normally played on a course with 18 holes with each hole having a tee box.

Golf in the Philippines

The sport was introduced into the Philippines by British nationals working at the Manila Railways Company. These British railway workers built a small golf course at the southern part of Intramuros during the Spanish period. When the Americans came, a nine-hole golf course was built close to the railway station.  This golf course eventually led to the establishment of the Manila Golf Club.

Experience The Bonga Festival of Sibonga

6/24/2017

Comments

Festivals or fiestas are one of the biggest events in the different towns in the archipelago. These festivals typically have a religious and non-religious aspect. The religious aspect comes in the form of a solemn procession where the images of the patron saints are carried along the major streets of the town.  On the other hand, the non-religious aspect is the street dancing competition and ritual showdown among different contingents of the competition. One of these festivals is the Bonga Festival of Sibonga.
Picture
Sibonga

The Municipality of Sibonga is located in the southern part of the island of Cebu. Just like many towns in the country, the name of the town came to be due to a misunderstanding between the natives and the Spaniards. When the Spaniards came to the town, they asked a group of natives for the name of the town. The natives thought the foreigners were asking for the name of the betel fruit they were trading, so they answered “bonga.” From that day on, the town was called Sibonga.
Picture
Bonga Festival

The Bonga Festival of Sibonga is a thanksgiving celebration among residents of the town for the blessings they received in the past year. The town also celebrates the abundance of the food and other resources in the town.  The festival is also held in honor of the patron saints of the town, St. Filomena and Our Lady of Pilar. It also falls on the feast day of its patron saints, August 9. The term “bonga” is the Cebuano word for fruit or harvest. The festival originated from the time of the Spaniards when each town celebrated the feast day of their patron saints. A solemn parade is typically held on the feast day of the patron saints.

The highlight of the Sibonga Festival is the street dancing competition where performers wear colorful costumes while dancing on the streets of the town. The members of each contingent are students from different public elementary and high schools in the town. In addition, there is also a non-school based category where the performers may not be students of these schools.

Bingka Dawa

The bingka dawa is a delicacy from the northern town of Asturias. While it is not easy to find this local treat, it is one of the things balikbayans look for whenever they return to Cebu. It is essentially a rice cake, bingka or bibingka with a twist. While many of these rice cakes use pilit or glutinous rice or even cassava as their main ingredient, the version of Asturias makes use of dawa or millet.

The dawa is actually used as bird food. But, in the town of Asturias, it is used as an ingredient in making a delicacy. The bingka dawa has a smoother and softer texture and is fluffier compared to other versions of the treat. There may also be some variations to the treat depending on the other ingredients used.

Asturias

The Municipality of Asturias is located in the northwestern part of the island of Cebu. The old name of the town is “Naghalin,” which comes from the Cebuano word “lalin” meaning “settlers from faraway places.” But, some people say the name came from the Cebuano term “naghaling,” which means to start a fire for cooking. The second explanation may be the correct one since it is close to a place that was once called “Bagakaw” or fiery cauldron.

The town was once a part of neighboring Tuburan before the king of Spain granted a petition for the creation of a separate town. The town also has six church bells that are considered as among the rarest in the island. The biggest bell weighs around one ton and the sound it makes can be heard over ten kilometers away.

The Municipality of Compostela is best known for its beach resorts where fond memories were made by longtime residents of Cebu. Despite its rural charm, the town has benefitted from its close proximity to metro Cebu. It also became home to a 150-hectare compound of Norkis Trading Company. When the company relocated to the town in 2003, the owner also set up the Q Park, which became one of the domestic tourism attractions of the town.

Q Park

The Q Park is a 200-hectare park where visitors can rest and reflect. It is also a welcome alternative to the beach resorts the town is known for. According to businessman Norberto Quisumbing Jr, the park is a legacy to the Filipino people. The area where Q Park is located used to be barren and hilly. There were a few trees in the area and birds deserted the place. Mr. Quisumbing said a number of miracles happened when they developed the place. He said the trees grew and birds started to return.
Picture

His inspiration for converting the area into a place for pilgrimages came when he discovered a limestone formation of the Virgin Mary carrying the Holy Child. The Q Park is now one of the places visited by locals during the Lenten season. The park accommodated 30,000 pilgrims during its first year of operations in 2005.

The location allows visitors to have a full view of the area.  In addition, the Q Park also has a replica of the house of the Blessed Virgin in Ephesus, Turkey. The replica took eight months to complete and is one of the sacred spots of the park.
